things we know:

* At 9.45am police were alerted to hostage situation in the Lindt Cafe at Martin Place

* Estimates of hostage numbers are uncertain. Anywhere between 13 - 40 people.

* 4 hostages held up their hands and faced windows, 2 held up a flag with Arabic writing on, confirmed to NOT BE THE ISLAMIC STATE

* Flag translates as “No god worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is his messenger” 

* Surrounding buildings have been evacuated, including the upper levels of the building in question

* The Sydney Opera House has been evacuated
